Which Products Require Bubble Wrap?
Bubble wrap is required for fragile products — items that could crack, shatter, or be damaged during FC operations or transit. Common product categories requiring bubble wrap include: glassware, ceramic items, fragile electronics, mirrors and glass decor, porcelain products, and any item that would break in a three-foot drop.
Bubble Wrap Application Specifications
Amazon's requirements for bubble-wrapped items:
• Minimum 2 inches of bubble wrap on all sides
• Product must not move or shift when box is shaken
• Wrap must be secured (taped, not just folded)
• No sharp corners or edges should protrude
• FNSKU label must remain visible and scannable after wrapping
• For glass: additional protection with corner guards is recommended
Bubble Wrap + Poly Bag: When to Use Both
Some products require both poly-bagging and bubble wrapping. For example, a glass candle holder: first bubble-wrap for fragility protection, then poly-bag for dust/moisture protection. In these cases, the FNSKU label goes on the outside of the poly bag (the outermost layer). The bubble wrap is inside the poly bag.
When Bubble Wrap Is NOT Required
Soft, flexible products typically don't need bubble wrap: clothing, plush toys, soft accessories. These products need poly-bagging but not bubble wrap. Hard plastic products that are non-fragile also generally don't require bubble wrap.

Everything else on this page is guidance. This is the requirement: a wrapped unit must survive a three-foot drop onto a hard surface without the contents breaking. Not four feet — three. And it is not one drop:

Five consecutive drops, same unit. If it survives all five, the packaging is adequate. If it does not, more bubble wrap is one answer and usually not the best one — see below.
The practical value of knowing the test is that you can run it yourself. Wrap one unit, drop it five times, open it. That answer is worth more than any amount of guessing about layer counts.
Two Layers, No Exposure
Amazon's working standard is a minimum of two layers of bubble wrap with no part of the product exposed, wrapped tightly and taped shut so the product cannot slide out. "Taped shut" is the part people skip: folded wrap opens in a tote and the unit is loose by the time it reaches a picker.
For genuinely fragile goods — glass, ceramic, mirrors — two layers is a starting point, not a target. If the unit fails the corner drop, that is where it will fail, and corner protection is what fixes it.
When Bubble Wrap Is the Wrong Answer
Adding layers has diminishing returns and adds dimensional weight, which you pay for on every unit forever. Three alternatives are often better:
- Over-boxing. A six-sided box around the retail box, with void fill, beats a thick bubble cocoon on anything with hard corners. It also protects the retail packaging, which matters if the box is part of what the customer is buying.
- Moulded or foam inserts. Best where the same SKU ships in volume — one tooling cost, then a faster and more reliable pack than hand-wrapping.
- Air pillows or foam sheets as void fill. Amazon accepts these; they are lighter than bubble wrap for filling space rather than cushioning contact.
The rule of thumb: bubble wrap protects surfaces, void fill stops movement, and over-boxing protects corners. Most failed drop tests are a movement or corner problem, not a surface one.
Where the Label Goes When There Are Layers
The FNSKU label goes on the outermost layer, always, and must be scannable without unwrapping anything. If a unit is bubble-wrapped and then poly-bagged, the label goes on the bag. If it is bubble-wrapped and over-boxed, it goes on the outer box.
Labels applied directly to bubble wrap are a common and avoidable failure: the surface is uneven, the barcode distorts across the bubbles, and the scan fails. If the outermost layer is bubble wrap, apply the label to a flat card or a smooth taped panel rather than the bubbles themselves.
