How to Choose an FBA Prep Centre
This page is deliberately not a pitch. If you are still working out whether to use a prep centre at all, and which one, these are the questions worth asking — including the ones where our answer is not the flattering one.
1. Where is it, and what does that state charge?
Location decides two costs: how long inbound freight takes to reach the fulfilment centres, and what sales tax applies to what you buy. Delaware charges no state or local sales tax, which is why prep centres cluster here; the East Coast corridor is the other reason. A prep centre in a high-tax state one hour from an FC may still beat a cheap one three days away — run both numbers rather than assuming.
2. What is actually included in the per-unit price?
The headline number is the least useful figure on most rate cards. Ask specifically whether FNSKU labelling is included or billed separately, whether receiving is free, and what happens when a unit needs a poly bag that was not quoted. Our own answer: labelling is included at every tier, carton and parcel receiving is free, pallet receiving is $25.00, and bagging is a separate $0.75 line that we ask you to authorise rather than adding silently.
3. What is the turnaround, and what stops the clock?
Everyone quotes a turnaround. Fewer will tell you what pauses it. Ask what happens when the carton count is short, when a unit needs unquoted prep, or when something restricted turns up. A provider who has not thought about this will discover it on your shipment.
4. Do they photograph and log, or just process?
Photographs at receiving are the evidence you need months later in a supplier dispute or an Amazon reimbursement claim. If a provider cannot show you the record for a unit that passed through last quarter, you are trusting rather than verifying.
5. What will they refuse?
A prep centre that accepts everything is either licensed for more than you think or is about to have a problem. Ask for the restricted list before you ship. Ours is published — hazmat, firearms, alcohol and tobacco, controlled substances, perishables; batteries, supplements, cosmetics and aerosols by prior approval.
6. Are the minimums real?
Some minimums are volume floors, some are monthly fees dressed up as commitments. Ask what happens in a slow month. We have no minimum and no setup fee, which means a slow month simply costs less.
What a Prep Centre Costs — the Honest Range
Across the US market, third-party FBA prep generally runs between roughly $0.70 and $2.50 per unit for standard work, with the spread driven by volume rather than quality. Add-ons — bagging, bubble wrap, bundling — sit on top. Our own tiers run $2.00 down to $0.69; the service page has the full table and the calculator runs your volume.
Self-prep is cheaper per unit only until you price your own time, space and equipment. At low volume it genuinely wins. Somewhere between 300 and 800 units a month, for most sellers, it stops winning — and the crossover point is worth calculating for your own case rather than taking anyone's word for it, ours included.
When You Do Not Need a Prep Centre
- Your supplier already preps to Amazon standard and proves it. Some factories do this well. If yours sends photographs of compliant units, a prep centre adds a handling step you may not need — though a US receiving point still helps with returns.
- You ship under a hundred units a month. At that volume the per-unit rate is at its highest and your own kitchen table is competitive.
- Your product is one SKU that never changes. Repetitive, simple prep is the easiest thing to do yourself.
We would rather tell you this now than take a first shipment you did not need to send.

Do I need a prep centre in a tax-free state?
Not strictly, but it removes sales tax from domestic inventory purchases routed through it. Delaware, Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Alaska have no state sales tax; Delaware is the one on the East Coast freight corridor.
Can my supplier prep instead of a prep centre?
Yes, and at high volume it is often cheaper. Ask the factory for photographs of prepped units before the run, and check the FNSKU is printed at 100% scale — supplier prep fails most often on label scaling.
