Walmart Fulfillment: WFS vs Delaware 3PL

Walmart Marketplace sellers have a genuine choice that Amazon sellers largely do not: Walmart Fulfillment Services is optional, and a third-party warehouse can serve Walmart orders directly. Which one is right depends almost entirely on how many channels you sell on.

What WFS Actually Charges

WFS has no signup or monthly subscription fee, and no minimum or maximum inventory requirement. You pay per unit fulfilled and per cubic foot stored.

The fulfillment fee covers receiving, stowing, picking, packing and inbound shipping — and, notably, customer support and returns that are not the seller's fault. That last part has real value and is easy to overlook when comparing raw per-unit numbers.

Two Changes Worth Knowing About

Long-term storage arrives 30 June 2026. Inventory sitting in WFS for more than 450 days will be charged $7.50 per cubic foot per month. That is ten times the standard rate. If you have slow-moving SKUs parked in WFS, this is the date to plan around.

New sellers get a meaningful discount. Walmart currently offers new WFS sellers 25% off fulfillment and 50% off storage, capped at $2,000 in savings. Existing sellers can earn up to 20% off fulfillment and up to 60% off storage based on WFS penetration and days-on-hand. These change — check the current programme in Seller Center before you model.

When WFS Is the Right Answer

We would rather tell you this plainly than pretend otherwise. WFS is usually the better choice when:

• Walmart is your only channel. There is no inventory-splitting problem to solve, so the main advantage of a 3PL disappears.
• Your stock turns quickly. At $0.75 per cubic foot, WFS storage is inexpensive. If inventory moves in under 90 days you barely feel it.
• You want the Pro Seller badge and fast-shipping tags. WFS makes hitting Walmart's delivery promises straightforward.
• You do not want to handle returns. Non-seller-fault returns being included is a genuine operational saving.

If those four describe you, use WFS. A 3PL will not beat it on those terms.

When a Delaware 3PL Makes More Sense

The case flips as soon as Walmart stops being your only channel.

• You sell on Walmart and Amazon and your own site. WFS inventory can only serve Walmart. Split your stock across WFS, FBA and a DTC warehouse and you are buying safety stock three times over — and running out in one channel while sitting on surplus in another.
• Your products need prep WFS does not do. Custom inserts, branded packaging, kitting, multi-SKU bundles.
• You have slow-moving or seasonal SKUs. The 450-day rule from June 2026 makes WFS an expensive place to park anything that does not move.
• Your inventory purchases are large. Routing inventory through a state with no sales tax means those purchases are made at 0%. Delaware is one of five such states.
• WFS will not take the product. Some categories, dimensions and hazmat classes are excluded.

The Comparison Sellers Actually Need

Comparing per-unit fulfillment cost alone is misleading. WFS bundles in customer service and returns; a 3PL charges for those separately. A fairer comparison looks at total landed cost per channel-served-unit:
